Some applications of pure LN crystal are limited by its relatively low optical damage threshold. While when doped with 5 mol% magnesium oxide, MgO:LiNbO3 crystal shows 1-2 orders of magnitude increase in optical damage threshold, coercive field for domain reversal also deceases from 21KV/mm to 6KV/mm below, UV-absorption edge position to 310 nm and OH-infrared absorption peak to 3535cm-1 , which greatly develops the applications of LN crystal.
