Carbon steel cut wire shot
The workhorse media for descaling, cleaning and peening steel, in as-cut and conditioned form across the full size range.
Carbon steel is what most blast rooms actually run. It is dense, hard and inexpensive per kilogram, and on a steel substrate the contamination question does not arise, so the decision comes down to durability and consistency rather than alloy.
Those two are where cut wire differs from cast shot. Cut wire starts as drawn wire cut to a length equal to its diameter, so every particle begins the same size, from the same material, with the same structure. Cast shot begins as a spread of sizes and has to be screened into grades.
That difference shows up in the operating mix rather than in the first bag. Media that starts uniform stays closer to uniform as it wears, which keeps the finish consistent and reduces the amount of fines the separator has to remove.
