Avoiding oil canning on large-format aluminium panels
Oil canning is the visible waviness in the flat area of a wide panel. It is a cosmetic effect rather than a structural failure, but on a large elevation in raking light it is the first thing anyone notices. It is caused by locked-in stress from the coil, by over-tight fixings, and by panels that are simply too wide for their gauge. Control comes from stiffener spacing, from fixings that allow thermal movement, and from breaking up wide flat areas.
