Perforated aluminium or stainless steel: which performs better outdoors?
Both metals survive outside, but they fail differently and cost differently. Aluminium is roughly a third the density of stainless steel, so a perforated aluminium facade puts far less dead load on the substructure and is easier to handle on site. Stainless steel is harder and more resistant to physical damage at ground level. For coated architectural work the decision usually comes down to weight, the cost per square metre and whether the panel is within reach of the public.
