A packaging producer needs more than one format because their customers do. Honeycomb, fanfold, bubble and crinkle are four products with four buyers, and a floor that runs all four from one roll store serves a much wider market than a single line.

The slitter underneath them is what makes the economics work: buy the mill's standard width, which is the cheapest paper available, and cut it to whatever each line needs that week. Twenty models across seven lines means the floor can be built up in stages without changing supplier.
