New housing is a conduit job: the cable goes in the slab and the walls before the finishes, and the whole 10 to 40 mm ladder is used on the same site, from data drops to the distribution leg.
Renovation is a trunking job, and the constraint is appearance rather than capacity. A trapezoid or low profile section reads as a moulding instead of a duct, which is usually what decides whether the homeowner accepts a surface route at all.
