This is zinc work. The detail required is moderate, the volumes are real and the plate is a consumable rather than a capital item, so the economics favour a plate that etches predictably at a sensible cost per sheet.
Predictability is the operative word. A printer running a calendar season does not want a plate that behaves differently from one box to the next, because the correction happens under deadline and the cost is the reprint rather than the plate.
