A yard trench run covered in galvanized grating
A long channel crossing a vehicle route, where a continuous run of covers has to sit flush with the concrete and still lift for cleaning.
The run crossed a route that vehicles use, which turns every panel joint into an impact point. The governing decision was therefore not the bar section but where the joints fell: panels were made to the run so that every joint landed on a support rather than mid-span.
Flush seating was the second requirement. A cover standing proud of the concrete is struck by every wheel; one sitting low collects water and grit. The frame was made with the panels so both sat to the same line.
Hot-dip galvanizing was specified because the channel is outdoors and takes runoff, which in winter carries road salt. Panels were numbered so the installer laid them in sequence rather than trying each one against the opening.
