Vane pump cartridge kit guide
What is inside a cartridge kit, when to fit one instead of a complete pump, and how to make the repair last.
A cartridge kit is the rotor, cam ring, vanes and side bushings supplied as a matched, pre-assembled set. Those four parts wear together as a system, and replacing them together is what restores the original running clearances. Replacing them individually rarely does.
Fit a cartridge kit rather than a whole pump when the housing, shaft and bearings are sound and the loss is flow rather than a mechanical failure. Fit a complete pump when the shaft has scored the seal area, when the mounting flange has been damaged, or when the housing bore itself has worn oval.
The repair lasts when the oil that killed the first cartridge is dealt with at the same time. Most vane cartridge failures are abrasive rather than fatigue: contaminated fluid rounds the vane tips and cuts the cam ring. Changing the kit without changing the filtration simply resets the clock on the same failure.
