Height is usually set by a rule rather than a preference. Mine sites specify a minimum whip height so that a light vehicle is visible over a bench or from a haul truck cab, and a whip fitted below it will be turned around at the gate regardless of how bright it is.

Colour and pattern follow the same logic. A solid colour reads as a marker and is what most industrial standards require; chasing and RGB modes read as decoration and are prohibited on some sites for exactly that reason. Recreational and industrial specifications are genuinely different products.

The base is where whips fail. A whip is a lever, loaded by wind at speed and by every impact the vehicle takes, and all of that load arrives at the mount. Quick release bases suit vehicles that alternate between road and site, threaded bases suit permanent fitment, magnetic bases suit temporary use only.

Mount to structure, not to bodywork. A whip base bolted to a thin panel will eventually tear it, and the repair is to the vehicle rather than to the light.
