Honeycomb, fanfold or crinkle

Three paper formats that answer three different packing problems, and are not interchangeable.

Honeycomb wraps. It is the format for an object that needs a protective layer around its surface, and it substitutes for bubble wrap. It is slower to apply per pack because wrapping is a manual operation.

Fanfold fills, in sheets. It is the format for boxes where the void is a definable shape: layered into a carton, folded over a product, or crumpled to fill a corner. It is fast at the bench because a stack pulls up by hand with no dispenser.

Crinkle fills, loosely. It is the format for irregular voids and for topping off a carton, and it substitutes for loose fill and shredded plastic. It is the fastest of the three to apply and the least protective per unit volume.

Most operations that make the change from plastic end up running two of the three, because wrapping and filling are genuinely different tasks. Where a single format is chosen for simplicity, it is usually fanfold, because it can be pressed into service for both at some cost in efficiency.
