Choosing bollards, machinery guards and rack guards

Mounting method and position matter more than diameter, because a guard that transfers the impact into a weak floor has only moved the damage.

A bollard stops a vehicle by transferring the impact into the floor. That means the fixing and the slab matter as much as the pipe: a heavy bollard bolted to a thin slab pulls the slab up rather than stopping the truck.

Position is the other half. A guard placed hard against the thing it protects transmits the impact straight into it. A small standoff lets the guard deform and absorb energy, which is the whole mechanism by which it works.

Removable bollards suit positions that must occasionally open for access, at the cost of being removed and not replaced. Fixed bollards suit everywhere else. Choosing removable for convenience in a position that never actually needs opening is a common and expensive habit.
